Bubble Poem

Polliwog Summer Writing Contest
(topic - BUBBLES)

Bubbles
by
Eileen Armstrong
(age 12)

O, how I love the way bubbles float,
not on the water like a boat,
but in the air so light and free.
O, how I wish that it were me
floating high above the house,
floating as quiet as a mouse.
Floating higher, higher still,
I think it would be quite a thrill.
Floating free and off the ground,
then I make a scary sound.
POP! I go and down I fall
in soapy drops, tiny and small.
Falling faster, faster still,
falling, falling more until
I wake up and realize
I had only fantasized
 that it was me
floating oh so light and free.
Although a bubble I am not,
I know as I lay on my cot,
some day Jesus will come for me.
Then I will float light and free
some day for eternity.

Meet the gang

Once upon a time there was a girl named Lisa.  She was 11 years of age and she had long blond-red hair that was as shiny and as smooth as a shiny penny and light blue eyes that shone like the sky.  She was an orphan and her only family was her pets Meritt and Sincerity.  Merritt was her pet hawk he was 19 years of age.  His beak was bright yellow his wings were black like the night sky with no stars, white like the snow, and dark brown like the bark of a tree.  Sincerity was her pet horse and she was 18 years of age.  She was brown-red like bricks and her main and tail were dark brown like the dirt.

Now these animals were vary special they weren’t just pets. No sir they were magical.  Meritt could fly like an eagle with the strength of an elephant but was as quiet as a mouse.  He had the power and might of a lion.  Sincerity could run like a cheetah and as swift as the wind.  She was powerful like a tiger but was as graceful as a swan.  Both of Lisa’s pets could talk and when Lisa said “eihpos” Meritt would turn into a ferocious griffin.  When she said “noitulover” Sincerity would turn into a beautiful Pegasus.  Lisa had been raised by her pets and even though she wasn’t magical she had special talents. She could talk to animals, could use a bow and never miss, could make any thing grow any were, and there are some she might not no yet. So now that you now some things about them here is their first adventure.

Adventure one: the beginning

Lisa, Meritt, and Sincerity lived in the forest outside of the kingdom jebados in a little cabin it was autumn the leaves were golden and red. When the light shown through them they light up and were very pretty. The cabin was surrounded by an army of trees.

“Meritt?” Lisa said one day bright sunny autumn day.

“What is it Lisa?” said Meritt.

“Well I was wondering what class were mom and dad?” said Lisa.

“Wait one moment.  Sincerity could you come here?!” he said.

“What is it Meritt?” said Sincerity.

“Come with me.” He said to Sincerity. Then they went out of hearing dissents from Lisa. Then Meritt whispered.

“She has asked the question. Do you think she is ready?”

“yes.” She whispered back.  They walked back to Lisa. Then Meritt said

“Lisa you know that you were an orphan and we took you in right?”

“Yes” she replied then he continued.

“Well you were an orphan because you and parents were in danger. They put you in our care because the wanted to keep you safe.  Your parents were king and queen over jebados.  You and your parents were in danger because you uncle Roderick was trying to take the throne. But Roderick got the throne and threw you parents in the dungeon.  Before Roderick did your father said that when you ask what class they were to tell you all this.  Sincerity will tell you the rest.”

Sincerity said “he also told us to tell you that we are magical not just that we can talk but more.”

Meritt  said “  I want you to touch Sincerity and say noitulover” Lisa thought it was a wired request but did as she was told. She touched Sincerity and said

“noitulover” all of a sudden Sincerity flouted in the air and grew gold wings and a gold horn and turned white and her main and tail turned gold then she landed and said

“Now go touch Meritt and say eihpos” this also a strange request but did as she was told She touched Meritt and said

“Eihpos” then all of a sudden Meritt flouted in the air and grew huge he grew big brown wings and 2 more legs a long tail his feathers became fur then landed.

Sincerity said “I am now a Pegasus and Meritt is a griffin.  Now I want you to get a flexible stick, some stiff sticks, some string and some stones.”  When Lisa came back Sincerity said

“ now  tie….” But before she could finish Lisa had made a bow and some arrows.  Then Meritt said

“ah one of the special talents her parents were talking about” but Lisa didn’t notice she was staring at what she just did. then Sincerity said

“your instinct will show you how to use it now fire at that tree.”  Then suddenly wizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz an arrow flew threw the air and then thunk it hit right in the middle of a tall oak tree.  Then Meritt said

“Now we are going to train you to use your talents and then we well take the throne from Roderick”

The Christmas Story
by
Eileen Armstrong
(age 11)

Once there was three wise men who saw up in the sky,
a star so vary bright and they knew just why.
“the king is born” they said glee.
“Let us bring gifts of three”
frankincense, gold, and myrrh too,
I think he will like them do you?
So off they rode so gallantly,
then some shepherds saw some thing holy.
Angles were all around,
then they all made a sound.
“the king is come,
now all must run!
Tall or short big or small
come and see the king you all!
So all went to the stale,
where the king lay altho small,
he would save one and all.
Then came the wise men frankincense, gold, and myrrh,
but then no one would stir.
For he awoke and smiled,
for he was a dear child.
Destined from birth
to save every one on earth.

A Great Miracle

A Great Miracle
by Eileen Armstrong
(age 10)

Imagine a brass candle holder with nine slots for candles, see children playing with a four sided top, you hear the sound of children laughing, you smell the scent of cooking oil well that is Hanukkah. Have you ever wondered what Hanukkah was all about, why Jews do it, and what it is for? Well here is the answer.

Now that brass candle holder you imagined is called a menorah. The menorah holds 9 candles and the 1 in the middle is called a shamash that means helper in Hebrew. The other 8 are for the 8 days in the miracle. What miracle you say? Well I think I should tell you about the miracle of Hanukkah. On the first Hanukkah the priests wanted to light their menorah. They only had enough oil for one day and it would take them 8 days to get more. So they lit it anyway but it stayed lit for 8 days and they had more oil by then.

That four sided top you imagined is called a dreidel. Each of the four sides has 1 Hebrew letters on it, which are nun, gimmel, hay, and shin you use it to play dreidel. To play each player gets 10 pieces of gelt. Gelt is candy or nuts children get for Hanukkah. Each player takes turns spinning the dreidel and does what you're supposed to do for whatever letter it is. One wins when someone gets all of the gelt.

All the food they eat is fried to represent the oil in the miracle. They eat latkes or fried potato pancakes with applesauce. The also eat sufganiyot or fried jelly doughnuts.

So now you know some things about Hanukkah. You know about the menorah, the miracle, the dreidel, gelt, and what food they eat. So why don't you share what you learned with others.

Hi my name is Eileen I’m a bottlenose dolphin. Do you know what I like to eat? Fish and squid.

I live in the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean. Some other animals that live around me are fish, squid, jellyfish and sharks.

I find my way around by echolocation I squeak and click the echo comes back and I can tell where an object is and how big it is.

That’s my mom got to go bye.

The old yellow chair
By Eileen Armstrong
(age 9)

My favorite place to be is our old yellow chair. It is really comfy to me. It’s a shade of yellow and orange and by the window. It has holes everywhere! Some times I do school work in it. It has a flower design on it. We have had it for about 7 years. Some times I sleep in it. I even eat in it some times! I like the chair.

The Wild Dogs

The Wild Dogs
By Eileen Armstrong
(age 10)

Imagine you are camping and almost a sleep. Then all of a sudden you hear

HOOOOOOOOooooooowwwwwwwww!

Then you wonder “What was that?!” Well that was a wolf. Then you think why do wolves howl and not bark, why do they hunt our pets and not live with us, why are they wolves and not dogs? Well here is why.

When you picture a wolf you think he howls at the moon and doesn’t bark. Well they do howl but not at the moon. They howl to communicate to the rest of the pack. As for barking wolves really do bark just only in specific situations like they just got kicked or swatted at.

When you think of wolves you think they eat meat and don’t live with us. Yes they do eat meat and some times they eat our pets. They don’t live with us because our ancestors have hunted their ancestors and that instinct to run from us has past through the generations of wolves so there for they are scared of us.

Now you might wonder why are wolves not dogs? Well even though wolves and dogs are related they are vary different animals. Wolves are wild animals and dogs are domesticated animals. Wolves hunt for their food but dogs wait for us to give them their food. Wolves at a zoo live around 17 years and wild wolves live to about 9 years well dogs live up to about 14 to 16 years.

So now you now why wolves howl that they do bark and why they bark. They some times eat are pets and tend to stay away form us and why. How and why wolves and dogs are different. Now that you know more about wolves you can share what you learned with other people.

Brom Bones

Brom Bones
by
Eileen Armstrong
(age 9)

Brom Bones is the bad guy in The Legend of Sleepy Hallow. He is tricky and he scared Ichabod Crane. He is also mean because he did it to get revenge.

He is tricky because in the story he scared Ichabod Crane by dressing as the heedless horseman. He uses a pumpkin for the head. In the story he chases Ichabod Crane on a black horse. Then he thorough the pumpkin at him (by this time Ichabod was scared to the tip of his nose).

He is mean because he did it so he could marry Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina was 18, and her father was rich (witch is why Brom Bones wants to marry her.) He did it to get revenge on Ichabod because Ichabod wants to marry her too.

He is a good character for the story because he makes it interesting. Brom also makes it exiting and challenging. He makes it fun to read over and over again.

“You have a great gift … a very great gift, and it must be used.”

Paul Revere is famous for his ride and bravery which saved the USA. Sybil Ludington is famous for her ride and bravery witch helped win the revolutionary war.

Paul Revere asked his friend to watch the enemy and on the roof of the church shine one lantern if they come by land shine two if by sea. They came by sea so Paul Revere rode off to spread the news. He warned the village and hollered “the red coats are coming,” as loud as he could and he saved the town!

Sybil Ludington was tucking her little brother in to bed when some one came to the door. He said to her dad “the enemy is coming.” Then Sybil Ludington said that she could warn the villagers. So she rode and shouted “the enemy is coming all soldiers meet at Ludington’s home and women and children be ready to flee from danger.” Then as she rode she got scared of robbers, but she kept going anyway.

They both helped win the revolutionary war by warning the people so they were ready. They both were brave Sybil Ludington was brave to keep going even though she was scared. Paul Revere was brave to risk his life to save his country.

"Jolynn's Birth Day"

Jolynn’s birth day
by
Eileen Armstrong
(age 9)
On May 27 2010 something vary important happened to me. My baby sister Jolynn was born! She has blue eyes but we’re not sure what color her hair is yet though. Now I’ll tell you a story about that day.
When I woke up the day jolynn was going to be born it was sunny and bright. I was cheerful and happy. The day before mummum, poppop, and Alex had come to our house. After we had a yummy breakfast we headed to the hospital in mumum and popop’s van to see mom dad and jolynn.
It was a short drive to the hospital but it took a long time to get to see mom. We waited and waited and waited. Alex and I played a fun Nintendo game to pass the time. Me and mummum got a stuffed puppy for me and josh to give to jolynn. Finally we got to see mom and the baby.
When we got to the room we saw mom and she had some cords taped to her arms. Jolynn was in a cradle on wheels and jolynn was really little. Dad was on the couch that was there which I don’t think was vary comfy.
Every one got to hold jolynn and she was so little. Mumum and poppop took a lot of pictures. Josh and I had ice cream and it was good. After awhile we went home. We ate a yummy super and went to bed.
The next day Nina, aunt Suzy, and Alison came down to see jolynn. They got to the hospital before me, josh, Alex, mumum, and poppop got there. Then we all got to hold jolynn and took more pictures. We had more ice cream then we went home.
That was last year now she is 10 months old. She is bigger then when she was born too. I love her a lot and she is special to me.

Winter

The Freezer
By Eileen Armstrong
(age 9)

The freezer flies through the trees as it brings winter to the forest as it paints the trees white and turns the pond solid. It makes the trees bend and paints over the leaves which makes them white. It howls and screams makes you shiver. It is the wind.

The Frost

He whooshes over the hills.
And zooms under the sills.
Swishes through the forest.
Stomped through the florist.
Squeaks on the roof.
I heard him though it was squeak proof!
Squawks in front of the store.
Bringing winter to the door.
For a chill hangs in the air.
Which chills your hair.
For soon the snow shall come this year.
Soft and sparkling and slow my dear.

Winter

Snow flakes that fall in winter are like a soft
Fluffy blanket
Which covers the town, trucks
And tulips.
It gets as cold a freezer and the pond freezes
Over each winter.
Bears, squirrels, and chipmunks all hibernate
And all the birds go south.
There are stars that fall and twinkle on the ground,
And if you listen carefully you might here a sound
Chirp chirp chirp as a cricket sings a lullaby
To her little ones and tries to
Go to sleep for the winter.

Winter walk

There was a time when I was calm.
My cat running round.
The snow was so cold all a round.
The forest was white with snow around me.
Then something creaked, and squeaked, and moaned.
There was a time when I was frightened
My cat moaned for food.
The wind went whoosh and made the trees creek.
The mice squeaked loud for cheese.
Then out of the forest I ran scared way to much.
Now I’m safe at home.

"I'm Not Sure"

I'm Not Sure
by
Eileen Armstrong (age 9)

I’m not sure that spring has come.
I see no flowers around me yet I see green grass.
I’m not sure that spring has come.
I see no squirrels jumping about yet I here them chatter.
I’m not sure that spring has come.
I see no birds flying around yet I here them chirping.
I’m not sure that spring has come.
I see no apples on the tree yet I see leaves.
I’m not sure that spring has come.
