The Sunrise
by Elias Dodge
(age 11)

The sunrise on the horizon is pink
fading into yellow that deepens into a glowing red
on the brink of darkness
as the darkness fades the sky turns to blue
and splotches of a gold like Atlantis

God Has a Plan for You

God Has a Plan for You
by
Elias Dodge
(age 11)

As I am writing this note, my cousin is in the Boston Children's Hospital because his donor heart is failing him. When he was only 2 years old he had a heart transplant. He told me that he had a vision of Jesus coming into that hospital room, and saying "I have plans for you". I've heard kids argue with him saying that this is not true, yet I believe that Jesus can come to anybody as they are.

The Bible says In Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future".

In Romans 5:3-4 Paul says "not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

So through these sufferings you may be going through God is going to produce a person out of you for his plans. God is going make you a person that you could never become. I have 4 brothers God is going to make me patient, loving, kind, and many other things through having my brothers.

In Matthew 5:4 Jesus says "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

Cyborg Mission #2

Chapter 2
Being a Cyborg
by
Elias Dodge
(age 11)

Two years later, Aaron awoke to hear his parents' voices.

"Morning hun" said his Mom's voice.
"Morning son" said his Dad's voice.
"Mom? Dad?" said Aaron.

Suddenly the words "Computer booting" appeared before his eyes.

"What are these words I'm seeing?" he mumbled.

System loading...

"Huh? What?" mumbled Aaron.

Eyesight loading...

"I've got perfect eyesight, you!" he said, bolting up, and hitting his head on an examining light.

"Ouch!" Aaron cried out, and rubbed his head. Then he looked up at the examining light.
"I don't remember there being an examining light there" he said to himself.

Then he looked around and said "I thought Mom and..." he caught himself mid sentence.

"This isn't my room" he breathed.

He started looking around the room. There was doctor's equipment all over the place. He then realized that he was on an examining table. What struck him most was that there were mechanic's tools as well.

"What surgery would need mechanic's tools?" he almost whispered.

Then he saw something that caught his eye and he wasn't sure if he could look at it. He took a deep breath and looked to his left. There were two other examination tables, and on them were two bodies covered by light blue sheets. They were both in comas. He looked over them and gasped. There were three screens with x-ray photos of himself, Sydney, and Pete. Aaron could see his right arm was gone, and that he had burns all over. His collarbone was broken, half his ribs were broken, and his hip as well. Sydney's left arm was gone, and she also had burns all over. Her collarbone was broken, and a few ribs. But Pete was the worst. His whole torso was shattered, and his skull was broken.

"Please tell me this is just a nightmare" Aaron sobbed.

He swallowed hard. He inhaled, and then exhaled. Again he inhaled, and then exhaled, sighed deeply, rolled over, and then went to sleep.

Chapter 1
How it began

Hi I'm Aaron and about to tell you a story.

It all started out when my six year old sister Sydney and my brother Peter or Pete were playing cards in my room. My robot Ash was charging his batteries plugged into an outlet in the corner of the room. We were playing our favorite card game Skip Bo. Pete put a one card down, and made a new pile. Then Pete put two Skip Bos, and a four down. Then he put down a six in front of him.

"Don't have any more moves" Pete said in his little five year old voice. He had learned to play skip bo after he learned how to count up to twelve. He had really wanted to play ever since he first watched me and Sydney play. Sydney sighed, and put a nine in front of herself.

"No more moves for me" she said. I put down a five a six and a seven on top of Pete's four. Then I put a one down and started a new pile. I then put an eleven in front of myself.

"I at least got us farther into the game" I said. So far the game wasn't going too well. I sighed.

"I sure hope it's not going to be like this the whole game" I said. Pete looked at his cards and nodded in approval. Sydney nodded as well. Chuck, Pete's robot, zoomed in and chuckled.

"You're never going to guess this joke," he said. I never really liked his laugh. Since he was a robot his laugh sounded more like some evil guy's slow evil laugh.

"Why did the spider get a car?" Chuck asked.

"I don't know" I said. Chuck looked at Sydney and Pete. Sydney just shrugged.

"I don't know either" Pete said. Chuck must have downloaded it to his memory, I thought.

"To take it out for a spin" Chuck said. Chuck laughed that annoying laugh once again. I really wished Pete would find a different laugh for Chuck. Pete and Sydney laughed. I forced a chuckle. I wasn't really up to jokes at the moment.

"Lets keep ..."

"Time to go" Mom yelled up the stairs, interrupting what I was about to say.

"Playing" I mumbled.

At this time I was seven years old. My birthday had been a few weeks and I had gotten the Skip Bo game that we had been playing before we had to leave.

We climbed into our red sedan and off we went. On route one we stopped at the red stop lights. Many cars were crossing route one because it was rush hour. It was a very cold icy snowy day in February. I saw a police car parked on the side of Lincoln avenue making sure cars were going at safe speeds. Then the light turned green. We were the first ones to go since we were at the front of the line.

Suddenly I heard squealing brakes and smelt burning rubber. I looked to my right and saw a car that had tried to stop in time but was to late and had slipped across the ice. It was coming right toward us and I could see the frightened face on the driver. The car slammed into us. Then the only thing in my world was smoke stinging pain and sirens.

How Does An Engine Work?

HOW DOES AN ENGINE WORK?
by
Elias Dodge (age 12)

The gasoline engine is an internal combustion engine. This means that fuels are burned inside it to provide power. The engine has something inside in it called an intake valve and an exhaust valve. Older engines have one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Some engines have two intake valves and one exhaust valve. Most high-performance engines have two intake valves and two exhaust valves. The intake and exhaust valves hang from the camshaft.

There is also something called an injector. The injector opens and lets out a mixture of fuel and air, then the intake valve[s] open, letting the mixture into the cylinder [the compartment containing the piston]. The piston is what is pushed when the fuel is burned. After the fuel is injected, the piston goes up, compressing the air inside the cylinder. The more compressed the air is inside the cylinder, the easier it is to burn fuel.

Then inside the engine, a spark plug ignites a spark and the fuel explodes, pushing the piston back down. Each time a piston goes down it turns something called a crankshaft around. The crankshaft is a revolving shaft that is driven by, or drives a crank. When the crankshaft goes around, the timing belt makes the camshaft open the valves at the right time.

The crankshaft is usually connected to the flywheel and the clutch. The flywheel is on the end of the crankshaft. When the crankshaft is spun around, the flywheel goes around. The flywheel has gear teeth around the edge, and when you engage the starter, it has a gear that engages those teeth and turns the flywheel. Turning the flywheel moves the crankshaft, which opens the valves. Then the process starts over.

The PCM [a computer] tells the injectors and the spark plugs when to fire. The flywheel also holds kinetic energy [energy in motion]. This is mainly to help smooth shifts and to keep engine RPMs [revolutions per minute] up, but it's a balancing act. A heavier flywheel requires more time and energy for the engine to get the RPMs up. A heavier flywheel also makes the engine lose RPMs more slowly because more kinetic energy is present in the rotating assembly and/or the drivetrain. Keeping the RPMs up is good for smoother shifts, but of course the flywheel shoudn't be to heavy, because it would slow the car's accelerartion. Lightweight flywheels are faster and are prefered by performance enthusiasts because they keep the RPMs up. Cars with automatic transmision have a flex plate instead of a flywheel, which is thinner. The timing belt runs from the flywheel or flex plate to the camshaft, and makes it so the camshaft opens the valves at the right time.

WHAT ARE OCTANE NUMBERS?
When you go to the gas station, you choose what type of gas you want. You might have wondered what the numbers on the buttons you hit to start the pump are. These numbers are called octane numbers. The octane number is the indication for antiknock quality. Well what exactly is antiknock? Gasolines are graded by their ability to resist exploding too soon or too quickly during the compression process within the cylinders of a gasoline engine. These explosions reduce energy and could damage the engine, and create a "knocking" or "pinging" sound. A gasoline's ability to resist knocking and to burn smoothly is its antiknock quality. Higher octane numbers mean the gasoline has greater antiknock qualities. So if you hit the 93 button that is higher antiknock quality, although it is more expensive.

On a Quiet Night

On a Quiet Night
by
Elias Dodge
(age 12)

I was shoveling in the snow
on a quiet night
the street light glow
ice hanging from the street light
quiet beeping from a snow plow
snow softly falling
I see now God's wonderful works
snow falling on a quiet night.

The Sneaky Cat

The sneaky cat
by Elias Dodge
(age 8)

There was a black cat named Jack. He was one of the sneakiest cats on main street.

At night he would sneak out and play with the other cats. The cats and him would find a ball of yarn and they would play tug a war. It was fun. Usually Jack would win because he was very strong. And each night he would do this.

He would play and play and play each night. He would take a nap at 1pm and wake up at 9am. So what would happen is he would go and play at 8pm and would go to bed at 1pm and wake up at 9am. He would play with his squeaky mouse toy and that is how his days would go. THE END

My New Skateboard

My new skateboard
by Elias Dodge
(age 8)

This is a story about me and my skateboard. It all started out in December some time before Christmas. My brother J had a birthday in October. He got some money and we never got to going  to a toys r us store so  we ended up going  in December and since it was  almost Christmas mom let me choose  something that I really wanted for Christmas and I wanted a skateboard.

A few days went past and finally it was Christmas day in the morning and I was just waking up and went down stairs.  Dad and J was already down stairs so I had breakfast and got dressed and then we opened presents and I  opened one and then I saw something under a present it looked like a skateboard.  I picked it up. It  was a skateboard. Mom said it was mine from her and dad.  I liked it a lot. I said Thank you.

went to my cousins house.  I showed my cousins. I went home and did some tricks. One was doing a wheelie while turning at the same time and the other was a wheelie.  Every day I played on it I had fun.

by Elias Dodge
(age 7)

Once upon a time there was a rock star named William.
He loved playing his guitar on stage, but
one day his guitar broke while playing on stage.

He went home and tried to fix it but he could not. He
was not very good at fixing things any way. He did not have enough
money to buy a guitar or pay a guitar fixer, but the people who
listened loved his music and really wanted to hear his music again.

They new his problem but then they had a idea they remembered that on January 19th was his birthday and today was January 18th.  They had all day to buy him a guitar and they could listened to his music again.

Finally the day came and it was time to open presents at his
party. Once he got to the family that got him a guitar he opened it
and there was a beautiful black guitar inside it.  The people and
William were happy once again.
